Research Governance

Research Governance is the range of regulations, principles and standards of good practice that exist to achieve, and continuously improve, research. It is a principle that is applied to everyone connected to healthcare research, whether as an investigator, healthcare professional, researcher, employer or support staff.

Healthcare research means any health-related research that involves humans, their tissue and/or data.

Research Governance is needed to:

• Safeguard participants in research
• Protect researchers/investigators (by providing a clear framework to work within)
• Enhance ethical and scientific quality
• Minimise risk
• Monitor practice and performance
• Promote good practice and ensure lessons are learned

CMDHB Research Governance

The CMDHB Research Committee is responsible for research governance at CMDHB. CMDHB staff can access research policies and procedures via the CMDHB intranet, SouthNET. The process required ensures that all research projects are recorded on the institutional research database, have appropriate regulatory approvals, and that legal documentation is correct and meets minimum requirements.

CMDHB Research Office

The CMDHB Research Office is operated by CCRep. Advice on all aspects of research governance policies and procedures at CMDHB can be obtained via SouthNET or by contacting the CMDHB Research Officer.

As part of managing commercial clinical research projects at CMDHB, CCRep will complete all research governance requirements on behalf of research sponsors.
